TRIPLE RINGS; Replicas from the yesterday, tomorrow
2021.12.10-2022.01.02
Culture Station Seoul 284

Trinity, PVC ball, Variable installation, 2021

A day in today’s life is remembered in a world long gone where the clock stopped ticking and the flame all but extinguished. The temporal and spatial title of the exhibition Triple Rings; signifies circlets that are interlocked and cycling in time—like birth-growth-death, production- distribution-consumption, and material-nature-people.

The birth of different objects was recalled through their death with the creators who are fated to continuously make things throughout their entire lives, and conjecture the reasons for their existence through their disappearances in the process of forming the exhibition. The showcased works are procured through the dubious method of replication, and produced by unlearning things that were well-known to us all.
The first steps of the process involved looking back on everyday objects that were discarded (or will be discarded) at some point in time that is unexperienced, and taking out the disqualified things (or things that will be disqualified) in retrograde time to form reasonable grounds.

A part of the far-reaching exploration—carried out by the 13 creator, researchers and the curator—into things that will disappear, must disappear, and will inevitably disappear is recorded in another sort of material convention and brief episode that is the exhibition. The process was in part making a tragic outlook of material culture that is on the path of extinction due to the development of science and technology, and ecological causes seen from the passage way of time, an in part the task of tracing the desires of the collective reflected in the act of design and in objects.

Around 100 objects scattered around the exhibition space all fail to gain the correct tense and context of their existence nor allotted places that logically coincide with them. Placed among them is a booklet of “Replica Reports“ that aids in understanding, in hindsight, the material culture and intellectual history that are weathered and eroded in the aftermath of unpredictable severance and destruction. And with this report booklet as a guide, the exhibition compels the viewers to picture a world created by the ”ancient moderners“ from the perspective of someone from the far future; to forget how we have been understanding objects around us insofar; and to practice taking a deep look into the things that will soon be discarded, the crude, dime a dozen things around us instead of all that glitters in gold, silver and bronze. We invite the viewers and soon-to be time travelers as we imagine the links of thoughts and resistance to be triggered when error values are canonized. (Juri Cho)
