When A Story Vanishes:

On Eclipse by Jung Sung Yoon

Park Sangmi

An eclipse is a phenomenon where one celestial body hides the other as it enters the other’s shadow.  A solar eclipse occurs when the moon (fully or partially) blocks the sun by passing in between the Sun and Earth. This divine alignment creates a momentary darkness on Earth. The word eclipse is:

“derived from the ancient Greek nounἔκλειψις (ékleipsis), which means "the abandonment", "the downfall", or the darkening of a heavenly body ", which is derived from the verbἐκλείπω (ekleípō) which means" to abandon ", "to darken", or to cease to exist "

The etymology of eclipse reveals that it is not just a matter of losing sunlight for several minutes. It is the abandonment, the downfall, and all existence coming to a stop....... It makes us imagine the first people who experienced the darkness an eclipse creates. One could easily have thought the world had ended. Perfect darkness could wipe out everything, even a sense of self, as well as all the memory that constitutes oneself.

Michelangelo Antonioni’s L’Eclisse (Eclipse) was not a fun movie to watch but its ending sequence is unforgettable. Two lovers, who filled the entire movie, promised to meet again that night and suddenly disappeared from the movie. The rest of the movie is occupied with empty streets, modern buildings, and unknown faces shown close-up. One cannot help feeling entirely abandoned. Yet, this is not completely unfamiliar. You feel as if you have visited this nightmarish place before. Everything appears to be clear and sharp but there is nothing to say, no one to communicate with. It is the state of extreme alienation and muted frenzy.

Antonioni envisioned this movie while he was in Florence to shoot an eclipse. In that moment, he experienced a world stricken with darkness. He felt like the darkness absorbed everything, even his emotion. Perhaps the final sequence of L'Eclisse is a representation of his experience. Empty roads with vanishing points, outer world-like silence, and sense of evanescence are evocative of Giorgio de Chirico’s paintings. A phrase from one of his prose poems is much akin to the depiction of the movie’s ending. “Late afternoon, street lights started to light up one by one and mountains in the east of the city began to disappear. The cliff above the fortress turned into hazy violet and felt like something was gathering. Nurses are chatting on the bench in the plaza……." Antonioni must have known de Chirico’s work, and continued it through the other medium. These two Italian men seem to share a certain poetic sentiment of empty moments and space.

A poet said love erases the contour of the other. In Jung Sung Yoon's Eclipse, two large black disks reciprocate very slowly on parallel tracks, their movements barely visible. Two disks exactly in the same size, overlap each other on each trip. Each complete encounter "erases" the outlines of both disks’, as each becomes the contour of the other. Their encounter climaxes into one black circle, something closer to despair than joy, like the perfect darkness of an eclipse. As soon as they become a perfect circle, they begin to separate from each other's body. This departure resembles the Orpheus myth. As Orpheus looked back at Eurydice, that moment his gaze met with her body, she fell to the underground world forever. This is another variation on the theme of encounters with eternal darkness. (Greek etymology orphe of Orpheus means "darkness"). As all Thanatos snuggle in Eros, there is no encounter promised without darkness.

Jung says, "When you meet a person, you think you see something bright and clear at first but, in the end, you end up being left out in the darkness.”

What might have begun as a story of a heartbreak vanishes now as the two black disks are turning ceaselessly on tracks. "The shadow of the man walking under the sunlight is more mysterious than any religion of the past, current, or future.” De Chirico said. Two disks, rotating on the tracks, slowly going back and forth, leave us feeling lost. The ultimate darkness, its climax and fall, is the great drama of unity and separation being repeated here. As soon as we think our eyes see an allegory of love, they are taken back to the mere movements of big, black objects. Story is forgotten for a second in this slow, infinite loop of darkness. And we fall off of the track.

이야기가 사라지는 순간

박상미

천문학에서 이클립스eclipse’는 한 천체가 다른 천체를 가리거나 그 그림자에 들어가는 현상을 말한다. 대표적인 이클립스, 개기일식은 달이 태양과 지구 사이에 들어와 태양을 가리는 현상으로, 달이 태양 위에 겹쳐지며 지구의 사람들은 대낮에 극적인 어둠을 경험하게 된다. eclipse의 어원을 찾아보면 이렇다.

The term is derived from the ancient Greek noun ἔκλειψις (ékleipsis), which means ‘the abandonment’, ‘the downfall’, or ‘the darkening of a heavenly body’, which is derived from the verb ἐκλείπω(ekleípō) which means ‘to abandon’, ‘to darken’, or ‘to cease to exist', a combination of prefix ἐκ- (ek-), from preposition ἐκ(ek), 'out', and of verb λείπω (leípō), ‘to be absent’.
